types of retaining walls and we 100% guarantee your satisfaction.
Types of Retaining Walls
The Cantilevered Wall
Cantilevered Walls use much less material than gravity
walls. These are constructed out of
internal stems and strongly reinforced with steel, and concrete that is cast in
place, or even masonry that is mortared (lots of the time it is shaped like an
inverted T). Basically, it is like a
beam to a large structural footing. Most
of the time they convert behind the wall horizontal pressure to vertical on the
ground below. Many times they are strengthened in front, or have a buttress or
counterfort on the back to improve strength.
We then ensure that it can resist large and/or heavy loads. The buttresses will be kept at 90 degree angles
to the primary flow of the wall. For these, they require strong rigid concrete
footing at a good depth.
The Bored Piling Wall
These are built by assembling bored piles, by digging and
excavating the excess soil. This wall
may include a series of earth anchors,
reinforcing beams, and/or operations for soil improvement with a reinforcement
layer of shotcrete. Many times, we use
this technique where sheet piling is a
satisfactory solution and where the noise or vibration levels of pile drivers
are unwanted.
The Gravity Wall
Gravity Walls largely depend on their weight and mass which
can be stone, concrete or any other weighty materials to resist rear
pressure. They lean back in the
direction of the dirt and soil that is retained, and it may have a setback
batter for making stability better. We
often see them using Mortar without stone or even in segmental concrete
builds. We can also make dry-stacked
ones that are a bit more flexible and don’t require that rigid footing.
Many years ago, in the early 20th century, the taller walls
were quite often gravity walls that were made from huge amounts of concrete or
stone. We are now building them most
often as composite gravity walls with a primary focus on earth retention or
with precast facing. There are a myriad
of other types of these gravity walls such as crib walls, log cabin style,
gabions from timber or concrete and filled with granular material or soil
nailed walls. Gravity Walls are quite
popular and prevalent in today's world.
Anchored Walls can be built in any of the previous styles of
walls that we've discussed, but we can include additional strength using cables
and other items that are anchored to the rock or soil that sits just
behind. We typically drive into the
material by boring into it. The anchors
will expand by the end of the cable, by mechanical ways or even through an
injection of pressurized concrete. A
bulb then begins forming in the mud after it expands. When we expect high loads, customers find
this kind of wall extremely effective, or if the wall needs to be slim because
of space or desire which would make it too weak.
The Sheet Piling Wall
On most occasions, we build Sheet Piling retaining walls in
soft soil or hard to reach and skinny spaces.
They can be built out of steel, vinyl, or wood planks that are drove
into the ground. Here is a quick list of
general material requirements on sheet piling walls: It’s usually driven 2/3 below ground and 1/3
above as a rough guideline. We can alter
this depending on your environment. When
a taller wall is needed, we will need an anchor to tie it back or place in the
soil a good distance behind the wall’s face, typically with a rod or
cable. Then we place the anchor behind
the “potential” failure plane in the soil.

Perhaps the most important consideration in proper design of
a retaining wall is to recognize downslopes due to gravity, and if the material
is moving forward. This can create
lateral pressure at the back of the wall.
Depending on the angle of friction, and strength of the material, other
items such as direction and magnitude of movement of the retaining structure
can come into play.
